Dilip Kumar’s death on Wednesday shocked and saddened the entire Indian film industry. At the age of 98, the legendary actor who died left behind a body of work and a void in cinema history that filmmakers and actors can learn from. On Wednesday evening, full state honors were accorded the actor’s burial at Juhu Qabarastan in Mumbai.

He is best known for his films Aan, Daag, Devdas, Madhumati, Azaad, Mughal-e-Azam, Gunga Jamuna, Kranti, Karma and Ram Aur Shyam.

He was also the only Indian recipient of Pakistan’s highest civilian award, Nishan-e-Imtiaz.

Dilip Kumar was awarded the highest cinema award in India, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, as a result of his contribution to the form. In addition, he received the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian award in the country.

His record for the most Filmfare Awards won and shared with Shah Rukh Khan is eight. In 1954, he won the inaugural trophy in the same category.
